About
Why this exists
There is a lot of good information about dementia, and a lot of moving stories from families further down the road. There is almost nothing for the first six months, when you do not yet know what you are dealing with and everything is urgent.
I have been the person in the hospital chair. I was a caregiver through cancer in my own family, and I am now at the age where my parents are getting older and the questions are quietly becoming mine — the stairs, the car, the pill organiser nobody is filling.
What I remember most is not the medical part. It is how much of it was administrative, and how much of the administrative part had a deadline I did not know about. Forms that had to be signed while someone could still sign them. A bank that would not accept a power of attorney. A doctor’s office that could not legally tell me anything.
Nobody warned me I would be grieving someone who was still sitting right in front of me.
The Ember Shift is for the moment the roles turn over. The name is the whole idea: something is handed across, and the work is keeping your own light going while you carry it.
What you can expect here
- Plain language. If a term needs a law degree, it gets translated.
- Checked facts. Anything about Medicare, Social Security or legal documents is traced back to the agency that runs it, and the source is linked.
- No pretending. This is hard, and some of it does not have a good answer. You will not be told to try gratitude journaling about it.
- Things you can hold. Printables, trackers and scripts, because the useful thing at 11pm is a page you can fill in, not a philosophy.
Faceless, for now
You will hear my voice before you see my face. Part of that is privacy — these stories belong to my family as much as to me. Part of it is that this is not really about me. If it helps to know who is talking: a mother of two teenagers in Western New York, in the sandwich years, writing things down as I learn them.
How this is paid for
Most of what is here is free. The printables and guides in the shop are what keep it going, and some links to products are affiliate links, which means a small commission at no extra cost to you. Nothing is recommended here that would not be recommended to my own family, and paid partnerships are always labelled.
Not legal, medical or financial advice Everything on this site is general education. Laws and programmes vary by state and change over time. For decisions about a specific person, talk to a clinician, an elder law attorney or a financial professional who knows the situation.
